Study Break

Study Break So Im trying to figure out a matrix issue while studying 18.03 and, realizing I have very little idea how to do it, I let my eyes stray to the next problem. This may have been, subconsciously, due to the hope that I may understand the next question and not feel dumb. Unfortunately (fortunately?) before I got a chance to comprehend the next problem I saw the words critical point. This reminded me of something. While many are now completely done with their year at MIT, there are still hundreds of students that are knee-deep in finals (including yours truly). Finals at MIT are just like finals anywhere, tests that see if you remember everything from an entire semester. Like anywhere else, all of these tests are crammed into one week, and again, just like any other place, there isnt a lot of time to study between finals. People describe an education at MIT like drinking out of a fire hose. Thats because MIT shoves as much knowledge down your throat as possible in the shortest amount of time it can. An example? AB BC Calculus in high school is designed to take about a year and a half. At MIT the equivalent course is 18.01. It takes 3 months. If youre feeling really hardcore you can take 18.01A which shoves all of multivariable calculus in there as well, but graciously gives you an extra month. Thats right, two and a half years of high school math condensed into 4 months. And then, at the end, a final. This class is not a particularly cruel exception. Most classes at MIT operate at a very fast pace and leave the student feeling comfortable about a lot of different things at the end of the semester but not necessarily ready to solve any problem you throw at them. This is why finals at MIT are a whole new kind of special. Many different acronyms have been invented for the word finals, most of which are kind of crude and can readily be found on Facebook (Ill leave the legwork up to you) but all center around never having actually learned anything being tested. Realizing this the week of finals scares MIT students, causing them to frantically study and try to learn an entire MIT semesters worth of work in a day or two. The definition of day becomes very nebulous at this point as sweatpants and flip-flop-clad knowledge harvesting beavers roam from review session to review session, library to library (for the quiet more than for the books), completely unaware of the fact that its 2 in the morning. Sleep schedules shift and get all wacky as life becomes more about learning than sleeping. Take a couple of examples: Maddie 11, after staying up until 5ish studying for 2.001, gets about 3 hours of sleep, takes her final, and then falls asleep for 6 hours. She wakes up at 8, completely rested and effectively has just reversed her internal clock, ready to go just as the sun sets (luckily this had a happy ending, she was able to get back to sleep later and woke up at a normal hour, well rested and un-jet-lagged). Michelle 11 decided just not to sleep before her 7.013 final, going at it after having been awake for over 24 hours. Her nap afterwards did the same thing as Maddies, taking her right into evening and nocturnalizing her. The same thing happened to Jon 11. So, critical point, how does that fit in? It seems like every night for the last three nights, whenever Im not studying Im in some kitchen or lounge listening to a conversation about critical points. Unlike in math when you just set the derivative equal to zero, the critical points being discussed at odd hours of the morning are much more difficult to solve for. What are they? When is it, that critical point, where going to bed is better than continuing to study? When will the benefits of rest overcome the benefits of studying? A number of factors come into play, but the general consensus is (although Michelle appears to disagree) that although sometimes hard to find, there always is a critical point and at some point you should just go to bed. I ask all of you to remember this going into your finals. I know it may not be as big an issue in high school, but its certainly something youll face at MIT, so its best to start the good habits now before they mess you up here. Now, Im back to studying for 18.03. My interest in this topic is a result of recent experiences with Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1 (DMI), especially with the following two instances: a young adult patient admitted at the hospital following a DKA episode during one of my nursing rotations and one of my instructors with type 1 diabetes. Learning is a continual process when people learn they generate ideas and they test them to their own values.   When the ideas survive the test then learning has occurred (Schaveran, 2007).   In my opinion, learning only occurs after information is filtered through ones brain and one that is retained in the long-term memory is what is learned. Learning is f g.t.r process meaning it followers a generate test and regenerate cycle.   At least this is according to the biologically based generative theory of learning.   This theory is built upon three premises.   One, that values drive learning, two that learning occurs by selection and three that learning is progressive (Schaverien, 2007) contrary to common thought learning is not a one-time affair, biological learning takes times and at the primary level it may take as long as 20 years for it to occur. This is because at the primary level. Genetic knowledge transfer from one living thing to another say through reproduction takes time.   At the secondary level i.e. within the immune system and brain the time frame is shorter while at the territory level that is through studying our history and culture knowledge transfer is relatively quicker (Schaverein, 2007) Perhaps this sound like technical jargon but Hutching puts a better perspective on the whole concept of time learning.   He says, Education is not a segregated activity conducted hours in certain places at a certain time of life.   It was the aim of society.   The city educated the man. The Athenian was educated by culture by paideia (Hutchins 1970:133) Learning has always been an intriguing concept to curious minds such as those of psychologist mostly because it is unseen and intangible process.   Psychologists such as Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, John Locke, Ivan Pavlov, BF Skinner, Jerome Brunner, George Kelly and Wolfgang Kohler are some of the key psychologist who contributed significant theories, which try to explain learning. This paper draws from a workplace context of how learning occurs; it also tracks ideas about growth and development in the work place basing argument from certain theories of learning.   It will also speculate on the various kinds of learning support in the workplace. Human growth and development occurs in stages.   In this workplace context, I choose to focus on Erickson’s model of lifespan development and how it affects the workplace learning and change, Erickson’s model concerns itself with psychosocial department of human beings.   It specifically touches on social roles and relationship of individuals and how they progress from childhood to late stages of life theory proposes. This theory proposes eight stages of life, which occurs in the same order to all individuals. (Barbara Newman, 2005).   Ã‚  This first stage revolves around trust and infants experience it.   At the stage there is need fell that one can depend on those around him.   This stage is very crucial to an individual and affects learning in the progressive stages if an infact gains trust in his environment, she/he learns to trust others.   The second stage is characterized by struggle for autonomy and doubt.   This stage occurs at about age 2-3 where by the infant seeks independence of others yet finds that the support of others is in dispensable. At this stage both of these aspects are crucial since without independence a child is clubbed with self-doubt when doing things on his own, at the same time support from others equally important for growth. The third stage at about age3-6 is characterized by struggles between initiative and guilt.   At this point, children not allowed to follow their own course are crippled with guilt whenever they do so.   This could lead to over dependence on others.   The fourth stage occurs at age seven through to early puberty.   This stage is characterized by internal conflict between industry and inferiority. During this stage, there is great interest to tackle tasks performed by adults.   Failures influence the Childs inferiority complex.   Similarly, successes build self-confidence and superiority complex.   Adolescence is the next stage characterized by confusion between self-identity and societal role.   There is a poor coordination between self-identity and life goals.   Failures are associated failure in life.   This is a very destructive behaviour such as drug abuse, dropouts and alcoholism.   The sixth stage is young adulthood.   At this stage struggles between confusion and self-identity have been resolved.   However, there is struggle between intimacy and partners and careers.   Some people combine this stage with the adult years since these years are ones that an individual is at their prime. Set in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Gilmore Girls is a charming television drama that tells the story of a single mother, Lorelai Gilmore, and her teenage daughter, Rory, as they navigate their way through the shifting tides of day-to-day life. Lorelai and Rorys relationship is one built out of friendship as much as it is based on maternal love, which allows for more drama and depth than most family shows. Lorelai played by Lauren Graham is a relatable character because she has built up her life from nothing since she got pregnant and left home. In her first television role Alexis Bledel, Rory, showed depth in her character and was relatable to many teens who watched the show. Rory gets thrust into the prestigious school Chilton that her grandparents pay for in return Rory and her mother must go to family dinner every Friday night. This starts conflict because Lorelai hasn’t had a good relationship with her parents since she got pregnant with Rory at sixteen. Richard and Emily Gilmore, Rory’s grandparents, played by Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop are rich and are not afraid to flaunt their wealth around. This ensures a lot of conflict between them and Lorelai because she doesn’t want any of their money and nothing to do with them. Rory’s best friend Lane, Keiko Agnea, is a Korean American who just want to play rock-n-roll, but her mother is stuck in her Korean ways and wants Lane to go to church and find a nice Korean boy to marry someday. : Once Rory graduated Chilton she goes to Yale, her grandfather’s alma mater. Lorelai is not happy about this because she thinks Rory is picking her grandparents over her mother. At Yale, Rory aspires to be a journalist and has tough times on the Yale newspaper team. Gilmore Girls started out as an alternative show to watch when all of the sexual innuendo ridden television shows were not what people wanted to watch. Gilmore Girls shows the depths of parenthood between a young mother and her teenage daughter. The strong relationship between the mother-daughter duo is most like a friendship. The issues of raising a teen daughter when Lorelai had to give up hers to raise Rory seemed like it had its tough points but was doable if you just stuck with it. The bickering between Lorelai and her parents sometimes got old, but it was a comfort because all children and parents fight. The small town of Stars Hollow had many characters that lit up the screen and made you want to visit occasionally but not live there. The money of each episode was spent mostly on the wardrobe because there were many costume change throughout the entire episodes. Also, getting the permit to film in the town is part of the production cost. In most of the episodes there were no special effects. When television all television shows were constantly bringing up sexual innuendos and sexual content Gilmore Girls went outside the norm and showed a somewhat wholesome television show about a mother-daughter relationship. This relationship wasn’t perfect, and there was a lot of conflict in the show. The truthfulness of the show kept people coming back week after week and it became a show people talked about. This show had seven seasons and throughout all the years the show kept it sizzle. The relationship was most like a friendship but at times there was conflict between them and there was a motherly side when you didn’t think there would This show changed society by not being normal but going outside the box and showed chemistry between a young mom and her teenage daughter. Set in a storybook Connecticut town populated by an eclectic mix of dreamers, artists and everyday folk, this multigenerational drama about family and friendship centers around Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory. Thus, the sovereign figure is an identifia ble person that is valid through the legitimate use of force and power under the object of authority. Austin uses this notion to show how laws emanate from the identifiable individual to produce validity and in effect authority and power. In Austin’s command theory the question of why do people obey the law is posed. Austin decided that the reason people obey the law is due to the habitual role to comply from the sovereign. This is due to the perceived threat of the imposition of a sanction through the power afforded from the right of the law. Equally, according to W. D Ross in his works ‘The Right and the Good’, Ross identified the reason why people obey due to ‘the fact that its laws are potent instruments for the general good[7]’. This indicates that the law is a power based subject and as such the threat of a sanction is based upon the notion of power. This is similar to the theory of Thomas Aquinas who believed that the ultimate goal of law is to preserve peace. This again, is arguably a power based subject that is structured on the concept of means and ends. These theories can be distinguished by the works of John Rawls who in 1971 scripted a ‘Theory of Justice’ which identified a moral duty for people to obey law. This moral obligation by its nature implies a certain degree of coercion. This coercion by nature is a power that the law relies upon to enforce a sanction. However, according to Herbert L. A Hart who argued that ‘when a number of persons conduct any joint enterprise according to rules and restrict liberty, those who have submitted to these restrictions when required have a right to a similar submission from those who have been benefited by their submission’. Thus Hart identifies obedience as an internal and external source, his emphasis in his ‘principle of fair play’ that there are both private and official concepts of obedience. This by its imposition inserts power as the primary course of legal authority. However, Hart criticised the imposition of forced compliance as it is an unaccep table form of compliance. According to Hart, the positivist theory requires the free choice of an individual to comply. However, obedience as a matter of course is a power orientated tool. Obedience is a tool by which the law can be judged as valid, however the fear of an imposed sanction is by its nature power based. In terms of modern positivist thought, Hans Kelsen indicated that law is based upon a set of ‘norms’. Thus, when a court has a ‘hard case’ to rule upon they use both political and moral principles to interpret and apply the law, thus Dworkin argued that a separate ethos of law and morality cannot in reality exist. Thus, a social convention by nature is based upon the imposition of power through the perceived threat of a sanction. Dworkin used the social convention to demonstrate a rule of compliance through the imposition of power and authority in the law. The movie was about a young man called DJ Williams who is in a dance crew called the â€Å"Goon Squad† with his brother Duron and other friends. They were battling for a big deal of money and beat the home crew. The home crew responds by attacking the Goon Squad after the battle. Duron saves his older brother from getting beat up but ends up getting killed by a gun shot.DJ Williams gets arrested and ends up living with his aunt Jackie and Uncle Nate in Atlanta, Georgia. He is sent to attend Truth University where he meets April Palmer, a student, who eventually becomes his lover. Several fights occur throught out the movie between April's boyfriend and DJ. Eventually April goes with DJ and leaves Grant, her boyfriend which angers her father, the head of the university. During his stay at Truth University DJ gets introduced to a new dance called Steppin'.DJ then teaches his new crew some of his old krumping moves back from Los Angeles. They combined the two dance coreographies which made them win their final round in the National Steppin' Competition. I really enjoyed this movie and the dance moves were extremely extraordinary and exotic. The cast was also something I enjoyed about the movie. There were famous stars acting in the movie such as Ne-Yo, Columbus Short, Megan Good, Brian White and Chris Brown. I strongly recommend anyone to watch this movie. You will not regret watching it!
